3 walkersWe are supporting Walking to Health projects to recognise people living with dementia who have contributed to the success of their project. These are our Stars of Dementia Friendly Walking.

Ian has vascular dementia and has been walking with the Bankfoot Health Walk group since it started in 2014. He was happy to be featured in Stride for Life’s Dementia Friendly Walk leaflet as someone living positively with dementia.

Denis is in his mid-50’s and has a diagnosis of early onset dementia, in addition to having a stroke, which he has made a good recovery from. When he first started walking his balance was poor and he was very quiet. Now, his walking is much steadier and he is much chattier and at ease.

Robert has been walking for three years on the monthly walk organised in conjunction with Stirling Walking Network and Alzheimer Scotland. He rarely sees anyone else other than his wife and principal carer Trina.

John is a founding member of the Bonnybridge Braveheart Wednesday morning walk maintaining it is walking that has kept him active over the past thirteen years.

Bob Rae has been walking with Braveheart for seven years, having been introduced to the walks by walker, and Star of Dementia Friendly Walking, John McCall.

Dougie has gone out of his way to encourage many people to walk in his five years volunteering with Bums Off Seats in Fife.

John is a positive role model and inspires others to keep active as a way to manage his own health condition.

In February 2017, John attended our Dementia Friendly Walk Leader training with his wife, Yvonne. This is the first time that someone with a diagnosis of dementia has participated in our training and it proved to be a real insight for both the delivery of the course and those delegates attending.

Rita is refreshingly open about her experiences of living with dementia and her growing trust in the group can be seen through her free interactions, even with new walkers.

Jim is a walker with Get Lanarkshire Walking at the Drumpellier Park Health Walk in Coatbridge. He has a diagnosis of early onset dementia. He likes the structure the walk provides to his day and has suggested very practical improvements for making the Health Walk more dementia friendly.
