What is a Health Walk?

Health Walks are low level, accessible, short group walks that are free to attend, led by trained Walk Leaders along a risk assessed route, and support the most inactive people to take part.

A group of men and women smile and wave as they walk along the pavement.

Health Walks are a supportive and welcoming way for you to start enjoying the many benefits of being physically active

A Health Walk:

  • is a friendly group walk
  • takes place regularly
  • is led by a trained Walk Leader along a risk assessed route
  • is less than an hour long
  • welcomes new participants who would benefit from being more active
  • is an opportunity to meet new people in your area and explore places you might not have been before

Health Walks are aimed at those who would benefit most from being more active and meeting others. This could include people who haven’t been active for a while and would like to start again, people recovering from ill health or who are managing a long-term condition, and anyone who’s been told by a health professional that they would benefit from being more active.

Those joining a local walk enjoy a whole range of benefits including increased fitness, improved mood and increased social interactions with other people and the local area. Taking part is free and requires no special equipment, making it an ideal way to become more active.

Paths for All supports a network of Health Walk providers throughout Scotland who organise free group walks every week and welcome new participants. We offer them training, funding, resources and guidance to help make their walks safe and enjoyable for all.
