Walk at Work Award

Celebrating employers in Scotland who are promoting everyday walking in their workplace.

The Walk at Work Award is an accreditation award for workplaces in Scotland.

It equips workplaces with the knowledge required to foster a walking culture, provide the right facilities for employees who walk at work, and take part in walking activities in the community.

The award contains three themes: Walking Culture, Walking Community, and Walking Facilities. To achieve the award, a workplace must complete 5 actions across each of the 3 themes.

Walking Culture

How much does your workplace value walking? This category provides you with the opportunity to show us what your workplace is doing to promote everyday walking. A few actions you can take include creating a walking route map for staff or visitors, carrying out a staff travel survey, or creating a "Walking champion" role for a member of staff to promote walking activities.

Walking Community

How often does your workplace get involved in community activities and events? The Walking Community category encourages workplaces to take part in activities that foster a sense of community. Whether you decide to get stuck in with a litter pick in your local area, get to know your colleagues more by taking part in the Step Count Challenge, or just make a point of circulating information about walking activities taking place in your workplace or local area, the idea is to build a sense of community around walking.

Walking Facilities

Providing the right facilities for staff is essential to encouraging walking. Small changes such as providing an area in which to dry damp umbrellas, shoes and coats make a difference, as do bigger changes such as providing standing desks for staff to use, and establishing lunchtime walking clubs. This category focuses on practical ways of encouraging walking in the workplace.

Throughout the process of taking part in the award, you will receive one-to-one support and guidance, as well as examples of best practice, templates, resources and signposting to other sources of information.
