Focus on friendship for the 16th annual Big Fit Walk campaign

Our Big Fit Walk 2019 campaign is aiming to introduce more people to walking this summer.

The Big Fit Walk 2019 was launched in Ayr by Joe FitzPatrick, Minister for Public Health, Sport and Wellbeing

Every year, the Big Fit Walk sees hundreds of organised walks taking place across Scotland in June, allowing people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the benefits of a short walk in a relaxed, friendly group.

This year, we are going a step further by encouraging people to not only take part in a Big Fit Walk this summer, but to join one of our 550 weekly Health Walks which run all year round.

With the theme of "Bring A Friend and Make a Few More", the 2019 campaign aims to highlight how being part of our growing walking network can be great for social health as well as physical and mental wellbeing.

Now, we are calling on Health Walk projects, clubs, groups, schools and workplaces to organise a 30-minute Big Fit Walk to show everyone how much fun walking in a group can be.

If you want to organise a Big Fit Walk we have everything you need to make it easy.

Visit our website, www.bigfitwalk.scot, for a range of free resources which you can download or receive in the post.

And, if you opt to advertise your walk on our online map, you'll not only attract a few more walkers, but you could win £150 for your project.

Ian Findlay, our Chief Officer said:

The Big Fit Walk is all about bringing people together to enjoy a walk in a fun and relaxed way.

This year, we’d like the Big Fit Walk to be a way for everyone to sample how simple and enjoyable walking in a friendly group is and encourage everyone to walk regularly, for example by joining one of our weekly Health Walks.

Walking is free, most people can do it and you don’t need any special equipment to do it. Regular walking is still one of the best things you can do for your physical, mental and social health.

If you love walking, why not introduce a friend to it this June? Everyone is welcome.
