Through funding from our Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme, Sustrans and Nestran, the council are working with communities in Huntly, Inverurie, Fraserburgh, Portlethen and Ellon to help support more sustainable and active travel.
The council’s ‘Integrated Travel Town Masterplan’ won the award for it’s bold strategy aiming to encourage local people to:
- Reduce non-sustainable journeys
- Increase active travel
- Make travel more effective
- Improve health
- Reduce carbon emissions from transport

We’re really pleased to see Aberdeenshire Council being recognised for its innovative project to encourage more walking, cycling and public transport use.
Their community engagement strategy, which saw them consulting with the public through events, online surveys and in schools, has allowed them to develop robust plans to change attitudes and behaviours towards sustainable transport.
The Masterplan set out a number of proposals, from infrastructure developments designed to support more active and integrated travel, to behaviour change interventions including mapping, signage, events and promotional activities. The proposals aim to encourage individuals to consider how to travel more sustainably, more actively and with greater efficiency with the goal to both improve health and reduce carbon emissions caused by transport.
