Michael over at the Sustrans office in Edinburgh has been in touch about their challenge. Here's what he had to say...

Sustrans Teams

Sustrans Scotland has entered two teams in the 2012 Step Count Challenge. Both teams, "Cakewalk" and "Dude, Where's My Bike?" will be taking a virtual walk along the length of National Cycle Route 1. That's a total distance of around 1,900 miles stretching from Dover in the south of England to Unst at the northern end of Shetland. One team will start from each end, meeting somewhere in the middle.

Landmarks along the way will include passing through John O'Groats, crossing the Scottish-English border and walking through London as well as stopping off at the Sustrans Scotland office in Edinburgh for a well deserved virtual cup of tea and possibly a real cake.

The two teams will be in friendly competition to see who can walk the furthest, and will also be trying to guess where on the route the two teams will meet.

In reality around half of all trips on the National Cycle Network are actually made on foot, with many trips being made by horse riders and wheelchair users as well as cyclists.
