National Walking Month: Join a health walk

May is here. The sun is out, the flowers are growing, and the entire month is dedicated to the wonders of walking. So what better time to join your local health walk than National Walking Month?

Paths for All fund and support over 550 health walks across Scotland every week. The beauty of a health walk is that you don’t need any special equipment, they are free to take part in, and they are a safe, short and social way to get active.

All health walks are led by trained and supportive volunteers who are always ready and delighted to welcome new faces.

Last year, almost 5000 new walkers joined a local health walk, contributing to the 370,000 attendances at health walks in that same year.

Health walks benefit walkers’ social, mental and physical health

Our 120 Walking for Health projects create supportive environments for everyone to enjoy the benefits of being physically active by running local health walks in every local authority in Scotland.

The positive improvements to people’s everyday lives after taking part in one of the walks can be great.

Older adults talk about how good it is to get out and about and how they feel less socially-isolated, while younger walkers have discovered they sleep better and feel less anxious.

Read some of the personal stories and learn how health walks have made a real difference to people’s lives.

No time like the present

At Paths for All, we promote everyday walking for everyone, everywhere.

This month offers lots of opportunities to get involved in walking. Not only can everyone join a local health walk, but you can get involved in one of our best-known campaigns.

We're preparing for June’s Big Fit Walk, a campaign that sees individuals and communities come together to enjoy the social and physical benefits of a short walk.

Walks are being organised across the country, so why not sign up to join one or organise your own? Click here to get involved.

Walking is for everyone

Working with Macmillan Cancer Support, we are developing more cancer friendly walks across Scotland. These health walks provide an additional level of support for people living cancer to become more active by walking.

We also recently celebrated the third anniversary of our Dementia Friendly Walking project, supporting people with dementia to live well and continue to be physically and socially active.

Take your first steps to getting active by joining a local health walk this National Walking Month!
