Active Travel Hubs

Active Travel Hubs are designed to encourage and support more people to walk, cycle and use public transport for their daily journeys instead of using the car. In Scotland, the aim is to develop a network of Active Travel Hubs in towns and cities across the country. These will give local people help and encouragement to travel actively more often. The benefits include improved health and wellbeing, cost savings for individuals as well as a reduced carbon footprint.

Active Travel Hubs can provide a range of services including:

  • Providing maps and information on active travel routes to key local destinations
  • Personalised travel planning and advice
  • Support local businesses in promoting workplace walking and cycling schemes
  • Support local events
  • Run short led rides and walks
  • Dr Bike sessions
  • Provide local knowledge on public transport options
  • Work in partnership with other organisations with similar aims

There are hubs already up and running in StirlingKilmarnock and Ayr. In June 2017 funding for a further 5 Hubs was announced in Dundee, Falkirk, Irvine, Perth and Aberdeen. The funding was awarded by the Energy Saving Trust's Low Carbon Travel and Transport Challenge Fund.

At Paths for All we believe that walking is key to active travel. We believe that Active Travel Hubs should aim to increase walking. If your Active Travel Hub encourages people to walk and provides the environment, information and support they need to do it, more people will choose not to use the car.

Paths for All can support organisations to integrate walking and multi-use path developments into Active Travel Hubs. Our Active Travel Hubs and Walking document gives more information about how we can help.
