Day two of the challenge and hopefully everyone has got off to a good start. We have a couple of teams taking part in the Paths for All office and we’re getting pretty competitive!

Office Pedometer Packs

Over the next 12 weeks we’ll use this blog to keep you up to date with the challenge. We’ll let you know how other workplaces are getting on, we’ll be giving you some little challenges to keep you motivated and give you the chance to win some prizes for you and your colleagues.

We also want to hear from you. If you’ve got a story to tell, some top tips on how to increase your step count or a picture of you and your colleagues getting out and about send them to us and we’ll share them through the blog. In return we’ll send out some Walk at Work goodies for you and your team. Just email us at the usual address walkatwork@pathsforall.org.uk

Hi
My team is called the Pheonix Wanderers, paying homage to our local pub!!!! We are all doing really great and there is a little bit of in house rivalry. The only man in our team seems to think that all the ladies are cheating as we seem to be doing more steps than him, but he doesnt seem to realise that is the benefit of having swinging hips!!!!

Good luck to everyone.

1) Split your laundry into 3 piles and walk extra by having to go back each time for an extra pile to place into your washing machine

2) Park further than normal from shops/ work to encourage you to get those extra steps in

3) Walk up and down every aisle in the shops. Not great for the bank but brilliant for the pedometer!

4) Drink as much liquid as possible during the day so that you have to get up and go to the toilet often then also ensure to go to the furtherest cubicle.

5) Instead of phoning work colleagues- take a walk to their desks or go find them.

These are just a few things I have picked up as I am doing the challenge. Makes you think about everything you do and is now encouraging me to walk more instead of taking the car everywhere :)

We in Arbroath Benefit Centre have set ourselves a challenge of walking round Europe.

Our route is :-
Arbroath-Paris (France)-Amsterdam (Holland) -Esbjerg(Denmark via Bremen in Germany)-Malmo (Sweden) -Riga (Latvia)-Vilnius (Lithuania)-Minsk (Belarus)-Kiev (Ukraine)-Bucharest (Romani)-Belgrade (Serbia)-Sofia (Bulgaria) Thessalonika- (Greece) Tirane (Albania) -Zagreb (Croatia)-Salzburg (Austria)--Zurich (Switzerland)-Marseilles-Malaga (Spain)-Bordeaux-Bruges(Belgium)-Arbroath

Total mileage we hope to travel is 9195.3 miles over the course of the 12 weeks. We have already travelled 1490 in the first two so are now just near Osnabruck in Germany on route from Amsterdam to Esbjerg in Denmark. The scenery is lovely!!!

1) A good way to get more steps in is when you are taking washing to your washing machine, split up the laundry and do multiple trips instead of one.

2) Instead of parking your car as near as possible to work or the shops, park it a little distance away and get more steps in.

3) Walk up every aisle in the shops- bad for the bank account but great for the pedometer :)

4) Instead of phoning colleagues/ managers- walk to their office and get extra steps in

5) Go to the furtherest toilet, photocopier, scanner etc to get those extra steps in

Hope these hints I had tried work for you too :)

The Nurses at Monklands Hospital are clocking up the steps at a great rate, would be great to see how we compare :)

I was too excited about watching The Rambert Dance Company tonight, that I danced my way out the back door (to amuse the children), and completely forgot about my pedometer! Luckily, I remembered to collect my car share lift though. Zero steps from me today. Sorry team. I’ll be the sacked team captain. However, my Eureka revelation is to put your pedometer on your trousers/skirt the night before! That way you can’t forget it like me. Now where did I put that work key fob? ;)

Thought I'd be clever this morning and get in a few extra steps by vigorously scraping ice off the Micra. It only gave me 30 steps! Either I need a bigger car or need to put in more of a hip swing with the scraper.
