Adopt a Path

Introduction

Adopt a Path (AAP) refers to a range of approaches where volunteers monitor or maintain paths in their local area and record their activity. Essentially, AAP is about local people taking some degree of ‘ownership’ of their local paths.

The use of volunteers is well-established in many conservation organisations but less so with outdoor access authorities. However, there are notable examples of some access authorities recognising the benefits of enlisting the help of volunteers for routine maintenance work.

Within this section of the website there is a review report of Adopt A Path practices in Scotland.  A selection of case studies within Scotland which highlight practices in local authorities, national organisations and within local communities, and a toolkit to provide a step by step approach to adopting a path within your area.
