Facilitation is about helping the meeting be purposeful and participatory. Traditionally a Chair would carry out this role, but increasingly forums may divide up facilitation responsibilities. Sometimes this can really help a forum to
develop as a group. A key aspiration of forum meetings would be that every individual shares a sense of responsibility for how they function.
- As a minimum, everyone needs to be clear about the responsibilities of Chair/meeting facilitator(s), and their own individual responsibility
- In an effective meeting, the Chair/meeting facilitator’s main concerns should be:
- Keeping the focus on the aims of the LAF.
- The functioning and process of the meeting i.e. NOT the issues the meeting is addressing.
- Helping everyone to do their best thinking
- If the Chair/meeting facilitator has a particular interest in the issue being discussed then someone else can take over the chairing/meeting facilitator role
- If the meeting is larger than about 10 or 12 members, consider sharing out some of the facilitation responsibilities
- Appoint facilitators, timekeepers, recorders when small group work goes on
Facilitation responsibilities are set out in more detail below
