Helping older adults to stay active and reduce risk of falls

Our Strength and balance resources will help you get older adults (65+) more active. These resources combine strength and balance exercises with advice on walking to help older adults stay active and independent. The programme was developed with expert input and advice from Professor Dawn Skelton of Glasgow Caledonian University and has been trialed successfuly with the Step Forth walking programme in Falkirk.

Physical Activity Guidelines for people over 65


This programme has been developed in response to the CMO Guidelines for Older Adults 2011, which recommends that older adults should aim to be active daily and incorporate activity to improve strength and balance twice each week.

Strength and Balance Resources


The programme consists of 14 simple exercises that will improve strength and balance and reduce the risk of falls in older adults.

The toolkit includes:

  • A set of laminated cue cards for easy demonstration of the 14 exercises in a group setting. The cards include handy tips to promote an active lifestyle. Four exercises are for frailer older adults
  • A take home leaflet for older adults that outlines 10 exercises and handy tips to be more active everyday
