Physical Activity & Obesity

PDF Print

Scotland has one of the worst obesity records in Europe. It is estimated that approximately 66.4% of men and 59.6% of women in Scotland are either overweight or obese. To reduce weight effectively our energy expenditure needs to exceed our energy intake. A healthy diet can reduce our intake and regular physical activity is essential to increasing our expenditure. Being regularly active is also important to maintain a healthy weight – particularly as we grow older and our metabolism declines.

NB It is recommended that in order to lose weight the minimum activity guideline is increased from 30 mins to 60-90 mins on most days of the week.
