Pedometers in the Workplace

As part of initiatives to encourage the use of pedometers, Paths to Health developed a Workplace Pedometer Pack in 2005, which was piloted in 18 workplaces across Scotland. The aims of the pilot were to encourage employees to be more active at work through the use of pedometers to count steps.

The Workplace Pedometer Pack was received positively by both employees and administrators involved in distributing pedometers. Participants found the pedometers raised awareness of their activity levels and encouraged them to change behaviour such as walking to the shops or exercising the dog more often. An evaluation study of pack was carried out and the Workplace Pedometer Pack is now available to purchase. Click here to find out how to obtain a pack.

If you are interested in using pedometers in the workplace, you can download supporting material from the Resources section. The information leaflet gives advice on why it’s good to walk and how a pedometer can help motivate people to walk more. The daily step count card allows employees to record their steps and monitor their own progress. The poster allows you to advertise pedometers within your workplace, with space to add your own contact details.
