Walk Leader Training

This one-day course delivered locally. It is aimed primarily at volunteers who are leading 'health walks' for the general public. The course provides practical advice on how to lead a walk safely and effectively and how to motivate people.

By the end of the training day, participants will be able to:

  • Relate their local health walk project to the national perspective - Paths to Health.
  • Outline the main benefits to be gained from a programme of regular walking.
  • Recognise the main barriers faced by people in participating in a programme of regular walking.
  • Explain the current recommended amount and type of physical activity for health benefits.
  • Explain the concept of a ‘health walk’ and its components.
  • Outline the roles and responsibilities of a Walk Leader.
  • Recognise potential hazards on a health walk.

If you have a group of volunteers (minimum 12) and you would like to organise a Walk Leader training day please read Section 7 of the Scheme Initiator Manual – Volunteer Walk Leader Training. This provides details on preparation for the course and the application form is included.

If you are an individual who would like to attend training, please see course dates for available spaces.
