Funding

Whether you are looking for assistance with a minor path improvement or a large-scale network development, you need to know where the money will come from. This section will help you find resources to match your ideas.

There are a huge variety of funding sources and schemes available to the voluntary sector, many of which change their priorities on a regular basis. We will start with some basics to help you through the funding minefield.

Planning from the outset

Make sure you know what you want to achieve before you start applying for funding. Organisations usually want to see specific outcomes from their investments.

Locating your target

Check whether the organisation's aims and objectives include outdoor access (you will probably get a clue from their "mission statement"). Don't waste energy on applying to the wrong people.

Talking the right language

When making an application, demonstrate how your project will help them to reach their aims. Don't just tell them what you want to do with their money!

Slicing up the pie

You may need to apply to more than one organisation, which means checking their rules on matching funding from different sources.

Timing is everything: check whether there is a deadline for submission and how easily you can deliver the project to their timescales.

Funding Resources

It is currently impractical for us to list all the funding organisations that give money for access projects, but listed below are some of the main long term and current short term funding sources.

Additionally, one of the most comprehensive tools relevant to communities in Scotland is the Rural Gateway funding guide
